Cooper Webb led every lap and took the win at the Foxborough Supercross; with the victory, Webb tied up the championship points at Round 13 of the 17-round 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season. It was Webb’s fourth win of the year, and in one night he erased an eight-point deficit in his pursuit of his third Supercross Championship.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Chase Sexton charged forward and challenged for the lead right up to the Final Lap as the crowd in Gillette Stadium cheered him on. Progressive Insurance ECSTAR Suzuki’s Ken Roczen held second place for the majority of the race, and landed the final spot on the podium when the checkered flag flew. In the Eastern Regional 250SX Class, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan earned his second win of the season.

“It’s crazy, you know, the season’s never over, you’ve just gotta put your head down and now it’s tied; it’s pretty crazy. So we’ll just stick to our thing, but man, it was great. Great race, had a great pace out front, and then made a big mistake. I missed the rhythm, and the guys got [up to] me. And then Chase was riding really well, I could feel him coming. [I lost time] just being kind of dumb in the whoops. [On the] last lap I decided to skim, and it was the best I hit them. But it was great, man. To get a holeshot like that, to lead every lap, was huge. The track was really tricky, especially when it started to rain, it could reach up and bite you. So it was a great race and, man, to get [into] the points lead is amazing. I want to give it up to the Good Lord, the whole Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing team, they worked their butts off, my mechanic Alex, [other sponsors], my wife, and man, this feels great.” – Cooper Webb

“I had a few good lines on the track. I was good on the on-off going outside, but it put me on the outside. And then Ken caught on to my line in the sand and was riding smart, so he made it tough on me. I set that pass up for almost a lap, and it was just a tough track overall. I feel like tonight I rode pretty well. I came from fifth or sixth, so [we’re] getting better and better. Obviously wanted that win; I was pretty close, I tried to hit that corner pretty hard after the finish line and slid out [at the start of the final lap]. Other than that, though, we’re making progress and happy to be getting a little closer in points; losing points to Cooper, but we’re kind of inching up a little bit. So we need to click off some wins and end this season on a high.” – Chase Sexton, when asked about having difficultly passing Roczen for second place.

“That was gnarly, but I had a lot of fun. I got off to a really good start… That track was really hardpack and shiny on some areas, and then the whoops got super edgy, and you could just see the ruts were hardpack. It just made for tricky [conditions], especially from the wall [area of the Stadium] through the sand section, and everything, it was really tight. So, it was a track that was hard to stay loose on; there’s a very fine line between pushing and trying to carry momentum. But that was a really good race. I was in second for a long time, and even with a lap to go we all bunched up again. Man, that was a fun race. I’m just really thankful to be back on the podium, that was really important for us. I’m sure the team was wondering sometimes what I was doing out there; especially in practice, I mean it was horrendous, but I’m just happy to be back up on the box.” – Ken Roczen

The Eastern Regional 250SX Class held its sixth round and Haiden Deegan took the victory with three rounds remaining in the regional championship. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Cameron McAdoo battled forward to second but then steadily lost ground to Deegan. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle held steady for a third-place finish on a challenging track with inconsistent traction.

“I knew I could do it. It’s inside of me, but man, the highs and lows of this sport, they get to you… I was just days just sitting in my room [after] not winning, I’m like, ‘Dude, this hurts, bro,’ like, it hurt bad. And I was like, ‘I need to win….’ I did a lot of work with our little break and let me tell you, it definitely paid off. I felt super consistent, super smooth, [and] executed my start… That’s just what I needed to do. Unfortunately, we have a big points gap that I need to try and close, but I’m going to do my best. I just gotta thank God for putting me in this position and blessing me with this life. Thank you to my whole team as well, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing put in a ton of work, my mechanic, my family – man we just, we grind baby.” – Haiden Deegan, when asked if he feels back to 100% after injuries earlier in the season.
Second place 250SX Class – Photo Credit: Feld Motor Sports, Inc. “To be back after three weeks off, it was just exciting to be back racing and back with the team. It was my first time in Foxborough, so I really enjoyed myself tonight. Haiden rode a great race, too, and I’m just stoked to put together another great points-building night and just happy with where we’re at… I’m just grateful and we’re going to keep on focusing on the same weekend that we’re on and staying where we’re at. So, shout out to all my people behind me, my family, my mechanic, my whole team; they’re so awesome. I’ve been together with them for a while and we’re just enjoying this so thank you everyone. Foxborough, you guys are awesome.” – Cameron McAdoo
Third place 250SX Class – Photo Credit: Feld Motor Sports, Inc.

“I had a good start, and they [Deegan and McAdoo] were both riding good, and to be honest I wasn’t really comfortable tonight. The track is really slippery, and I couldn’t really find good lines during the whole Main Event. So of course I’m not really happy with my result, but P-3, I didn’t lose a lot [of points] for the championship and we are still in the fight. I enjoy riding here, another great track, and I’m really looking forward to next weekend.” – Tom Vialle

The SX Futures Class held its fourth round of 2024 and Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Drew Adams took the win, his third in a row. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Gavin Towers took second place, and KTM Elite Monster Energy’s Luke Fauser earned third after an exciting defense of the position late in the race from round one winner Troy Lee Designs GASGAS’s Cole Davies, who eventually finished in fifth.
First place SX Futures Class – Photo Credit: Feld Motor Sports, Inc.

“I’d say [the track] was probably a little bit rougher in qualifying earlier today just because of all the rain we had [earlier in the week]… Two weeks ago in St. Louis I had a really bad start, so I had to work really hard there, and so these past two weeks I’ve just been working on starts. Yeah, it looks like I fixed it.” – Drew Adams, when asked about racing the track straight after the 450 Heats and about his better start compared to the SX Futures race in St. Louis.

The Foxborough event kicked off the final stretch of the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season. The final four rounds take place over the next four consecutive Saturdays, each in an open-air stadium. The next race, Round 14, will be inside Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee; it will host the season’s first East/West 250SX Class Showdown. The final races will wrap up what has been one of the closest and most exciting seasons in the sport’s history. Every event also pays points towards the SuperMotocross World Championship, which is in its second year. The SMX series combines points from the 17-round Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and the 11-round Pro Motocross Championship to seed riders into the sport’s post-season racing with a points-reset to the equivalent of points normally earned at a single event. Increasing point payouts through two Playoffs and one Final will determine an overall SMX World Champion.

Ferry out of Arlington Supercross https://www.motoheadmag.com/ferry-out-of-arlington-supercross/ Sat, 24 Feb 2024 19:13:14 +0000 https://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=39601 Supercross rookie Evan Ferry has frustratingly been ruled out of the Arlington Supercross – round two of the 250SX East series – following a fall during the event’s press day, yesterday.

During press day inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Ferry fell, resulting in an injury to his right shoulder. Initially, Evan and the team were hopeful that he would be able to compete in the event, but following medical examinations, it became clear that he was unable to take part in today’s proceedings.

Evan will seek further medical investigation and advice from his personal doctor on Monday to confirm what the prognosis will be.

Everyone at Triumph Racing wishes Evan all the very best for a speedy recovery and looks forward to seeing him back on track soon.

Bobby Hewitt – Triumph Racing Team Principal:
“Obviously, this is a huge disappointment for Evan and the whole Triumph Racing team. Evan had a really rough time of things at the opening round of the 250SX East series, getting taken out in the first corner of the main event, so we were really hoping that this weekend he’d be able to show what he’s capable of. Sadly, that’s not going to be the case, which is a huge shame for Evan. Everyone in the team wishes him all the best for a speedy recovery and we hope to have a more detailed update on the situation when he’s seen his doctor on Monday.”

Villa Park is ready for World SX opener https://www.motoheadmag.com/villa-park-is-ready-for-world-sx-opener/ Fri, 30 Jun 2023 09:58:12 +0000 https://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=38102 The FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) is set to make history as it ventures into the vibrant city of Birmingham for the first time on Saturday. The iconic Villa Park, known for its rich history in sports, will play host to the opening race of the season. Take the incredible venue, partner it with some of the most talented supercross racers in the world and the action is set to be absolutely spine-tingling.

Nestled in the heart of Birmingham, Villa Park stands tall as an iconic venue steeped in rich sporting heritage. Since its inception, this hallowed ground has witnessed countless thrilling battles and unforgettable moments across various disciplines. From football to concerts and now the FIM World Supercross Championship, Villa Park has become synonymous with sporting excellence.

Dating back to 1897, Villa Park was originally constructed to serve as the home ground for Aston Villa Football Club. With its classic architecture and vibrant atmosphere, the stadium quickly garnered a reputation as one of the most revered football venues in England. Over the years, it has witnessed numerous historic moments, including domestic and international matches that have captivated fans worldwide.

However, the arrival of the FIM World Supercross Championship marks a thrilling new chapter in Villa Park’s storied history. This esteemed venue, with its expansive stands enveloping the excitement of a Supercross track, provides the perfect stage for high-octane Supercross action. The contrast between the stadium’s historic charm and the cutting-edge world of Supercross creates an atmosphere that is as vibrant as the racing itself.

In 2022, history was made as the World Supercross Championship burst onto the scene with incredible intensity. The 35,000 fans packed into Cardiff’s Principality Stadium were treated to an electrifying spectacle. The racing itself lived up to expectations, showcasing the finest talent in the sport. Eli Tomac of Monster Energy Yamaha, taking full advantage of his wildcard status, dominated the WSX competition, leaving Ken Roczen and Vince Friese in his wake.

However, the event was not without its challenges. Supercross legend Chad Reed experienced a catastrophic crash due to a part failure, resulting in a violent impact with the ground.
In the SX2 class, Shane McElrath claimed a solid victory in an exhilarating three-final format, pipping Chris Blose and Mitch Oldenburg. The event proved to be an overwhelming success, captivating both seasoned supercross fans and newbies alike. The electrifying atmosphere and thrilling racing action left an indelible mark on the spectators – the World Supercross Championship had arrived!

Now, Birmingham has the honour of continuing the legacy of this exhilarating event as it hosts the 2023 series opener. The track has been designed to provide a true battlefield: technical rhythm sections, big whoops, eyewatering triple jumps, and a finish line jump just waiting to play host to victory whips. These elements will test the athletes’ abilities and provide world-class racing – get ready for some bar-bangin’ action!

The British GP will witness an impressive gathering of Supercross talent, with absolute superstars of the sport showcasing their skills on the Villa Park track. Leading the charge in the WSX class is the fiercely competitive Ken Roczen. There isn’t a rider with a bigger heart than Roczen, fighting back from a near career-ending injury to be crowned the 2022 World Supercross Champion. Roczen is at home on his Suzuki RM-Z450 machine, evoking memories of his success in both the USA and Europe on yellow machinery. Roczen is carrying momentum from his AMA Supercross success and means business. However, this won’t be an easy task for “Kickstart Kenny,” as a worldclass lineup of Supercross athletes is chomping at the bit to steal Roczen’s thunder.

The lineup of American racers vying for success is led by veteran racer Justin Brayton, who has his sights firmly set on the top step. Retiring from racing in the USA, Brayton has shifted his focus to the World Supercross Championship, joining the Firepower Honda team. JB is a smooth and calculated rider who possesses the ability to disrupt the Roczen show. Joey Savagty, riding for Rick Ware Racing, showed flashes of brilliance and incredible speed in 2022. With another year under his belt, expect Savagty to capitalise on that speed to become a serious threat to win races. Savagty’s teammate, Colt Nichols, will be one to watch, as will the legendary Cole Seely.

French riders Cédric Soubeyras, Jordi Tixier, Greg Aranda, and Thomas Ramette will bring their European flair to the Supercross circuit, while lone Australian Matt Moss could be an underdog capable of stealing the show – this WSX class is stacked!

The SX2 class is set to be a high-revving, bar-banging affair as reigning World Champion Shane McElrath fights to make it two in a row. McElrath and his number-one Rick Ware Racing machine mean business, with a host of newcomers and returning athletes nipping at his heels. The MotoConcepts duo of Mitchell Oldenburg and Mike Alessi will have their Honda machinery focused on the front, while MDK Motorsports SX’s Justin Bogle will look to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season to be in the running for the crown. Keep an eye on the young Aussie Craig Dack Racing Yamaha duo of Luke Clout and Aaron Tanti; these guys mean business and have the speed to turn heads.

In addition to the international stars, British fans have two local riders to cheer for: Dean Wilson and Max Anstie, both mounted on FirePower Honda machinery, aim to make their mark on home soil. Wilson is lining up in the WSX class on his CRF450R in his first season as a supercross-only rider. Max Anstie is coming into the SX2 class with a whole load of momentum, fresh off his impressive AMA Supercross results. Max won’t be lining up to finish in second place, particularly in front of the British fans. With their extensive experience and hometown support, Wilson and Anstie possess the potential to surprise and delight the crowd.

New world Supercross series revealed https://www.motoheadmag.com/new-world-supercross-series-revealed/ Tue, 01 Mar 2022 11:09:32 +0000 http://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=34096 SX Global, the Australian company that recently earned the exclusive rights to manage and promote the FIM Supercross World Championship, today unveiled plans for the comprehensive global championship series. Featuring an independent team ownership model, unprecedented financial support for teams and riders, expanded opportunities for global and local sponsors and innovations to elevate the broadcast and in-stadium experience; the FIM Supercross World Championship represents the most progressive and ambitious platform to elevate the sport and expand its appeal across the world.

The series will feature a highly exclusive structure, with only 10 team licenses available to independent owners, and an unparalleled level of financial support for teams, including seed funding for every team entering the series, appearance fees at every event, and logistics and freight support throughout the series. In total, more than $50 million has been designated specifically for team and rider support over five years. In addition, the independent ownership model opens the door for significant sponsorship opportunities on global and local event levels.

The global series will feature the richest prize purses in the sport’s history, with a total of $250,000 up for grabs at each event. The FIM Supercross World Championship will follow the established two-class format, with each team fielding four riders – two in the WSX (450cc) class, and two in the SX2 (250cc) class. Furthermore, every event will allow for two wildcard entries in each class, providing opportunities for local riders and sponsor-driven exemptions to round out the 22-rider field. SX Global also plans to deliver an elevated experience for fans, through unique race formats, broadcast innovations, and in-stadium attractions that elevate the overall entertainment experience.

Plans for the global championship series were underscored today by the news of Mubadala Capital’s investment in SX Global, bringing an unprecedented level of financial support and development resources on behalf of the FIM Supercross World Championship. Mubadala Capital, the asset management arm of Mubadala Investment Company, a sovereign investor with $243 billion in assets under management, brings a wealth of experience in funding the development of global business and sports ventures.

“There is a massive fanbase and untapped demand for supercross outside the United States and backed by the financial support and significant resource of Mubadala Capital, we intend to feed that, bringing the sport to new regions through the most exciting and lucrative world championship series in the history of the sport,” said Tony Cochrane, president of SX Global. “We have created an entirely new model for supercross: one that emphasises expanded financial support and opportunities for riders and teams, expanded opportunities for sponsorship and an elevated experience for fans.”

The FIM Supercross World Championship will take place annually, in the second half of the year. With plans for five events from September through November, 2022 will serve as a ‘pilot’ season, allowing the series to establish itself and build momentum. 2023, and subsequent years, will see the series expand annually between June and November.

While professional supercross has seen success in the United States for decades, there has yet to be a definitive global series to lay claim to a true FIM-sanctioned world championship. Highly-successful events are held throughout Europe and Australia every year, normally around September–December. However, these events are not currently linked by any official FIM ‘championship’ status, and this remains a significant untapped opportunity for the sport’s ongoing credibility and evolution, as well as a significant opportunity for riders and teams to expand their influence and financial prospects.

“Over the years, there have been various attempts to build a true world championship series for supercross, but none of them have succeeded, due to deficiencies in funding and resource, lack of global and regional relationships and a variety of other factors,” said Adam Bailey, managing director, Motorsport, for SX Global. “Our team possess the necessary supercross and international event background, relationships and expertise, and the funding to make this world championship a reality.”

SX Global brings a team of highly qualified motorsports and entertainment executives, armed with the experience to successfully deliver a series of this magnitude. SX Global President, Tony Cochrane, spearheaded the development and success of V8 Supercars, an Australian-based auto racing series that became one of Australia’s most successful motorsports, eventually expanding with events in Shanghai, the United States, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and New Zealand. In addition, proven supercross event veterans Adam Bailey and Ryan Sanderson have been the driving force behind Australia’s highest-profile supercross offering, the AUS-X open. The duo has promoted five years of consecutive sold out AUS-X Open events in Sydney (2015-2018) and Melbourne (2019), along with successful events in Auckland, New Zealand in 2018 and 2019.

“Our entire careers have been driven by a passion for motorsport and entertainment, and our motivations are as pure as they come: to continue to evolve and elevate our sport and its incredible athletes to new levels of global relevance and success,” said Ryan Sanderson, managing director, Commercial, for SX Global. “Our aim is to take the amazing sport of supercross global and reveal its greatness to millions of new fans all over the world.”

About SX Global: Based in Queensland, Australia, SX Global is a collective of world class sports marketing and entertainment experts who operate globally within the motorsports and entertainment industries. Considered the “founding father” of the modern era of Australian motor racing, Tony Cochrane leads the SX Global team as president, bringing more than 45 years of experience in developing and managing successful motorsports series and events. Managing Directors, Adam Bailey, a former competitive rider, and Ryan Sanderson, bring extensive proven experience in supercross event development, management, and promotion after five years of successfully delivering the largest action sports and supercross event in the southern hemisphere, the AUS-X Open.

MUBADALA CAPITAL BACKS SX GLOBAL

Mubadala Capital, the asset management subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company, one of the world’s leading sovereign investors with US$243 billion of assets under management, today announced its investment in SX Global, an Australian company established to develop, promote, and commercialize the FIM Supercross World Championship.

Mubadala Capital has established a track record of successfully investing in category leaders across sports, media, and entertainment—including EMI Music Publishing, Endeavor Group Holdings, Reigning Champs, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES Network), among others—and this investment continues its history of backing world-class management teams in building differentiated global sports, media and entertainment businesses.

Mubadala Capital’s investment will support SX Global’s expansion plans for supercross and its efforts to capitalize on the exclusive rights it has secured from the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to manage and promote the new FIM Supercross World Championship, bringing the exciting sport of off-road motorbike racing to fans across the globe in a new competitive format.
