With his second successive Moto title secured the previous weekend, Britain’s Todd Kellett
dominated the sixth and final round of the 2024 FIM Sand Races World Cup – the Ronde des Sables Hossegor Capbreton – with a true champion’s performance in south-west France to end the season with a maximum total of one-hundred-and-fifty points.

The twenty-seven-year-old’s starts have been a key factor in his commanding results this season, but for once he failed to streak into an immediate lead and instead ended the opening lap in twenty-first after falling in the opening turn as home hero Jérémy Hauquier – Yamaha led Junior Bal – Husqvarna with Valentin Madoulaud – Yamaha the third of the series’ registered riders across the line in fifth. However, by the end of lap two Kellett was up to eighth – just over eight seconds behind Hauquier – and on the following lap he carved his way to the front where he remained until the chequered flag came out to signal the end of the two-and-a-half-hour race.

This race was really challenging – it’s a very demanding race,” said Kellett. “Unfortunately, I crashed in the first corner, but I managed to fight my way through the traffic quite quickly and found a really good rhythm. To take twenty-five points in every race this year is incredible and what a fantastic place to finish the series. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Having picked up maximum points at the Enduropale du Touquet Pas-de-Calais, the Enduro del Verano in Argentina, the Ronde des Sables de Loon-Plage, Italy’s Bibione Sand Storm and the Monte Gordo Sand Race in Portugal, Kellett appeared to have saved his best form until last. Only one other rider – Cyril Genot – Honda, who is not registered for the series – managed to match his total of twenty-four laps and even then he was over seven-and-a-half minutes behind.
Putting in a strong charge in the final thirty minutes, Joey Nuques – Yamaha was next best of the registered riders, forcing his way through to fourth overall just ahead of Hauquier whose fifth-placed finish secured second in the points ahead of Maxime Sot – Fantic who ended the day seventh

Belgian Yentel Martens – Fantic claimed tenth, Valentin Madoulaud – Yamaha eleventh and Camille Chapeliere – KTM twelfth.Leading home the Moto Women competitors as she hadalready done on five occasions this season, Belgium’s Amandine Verstappen – Yamaha was a hard-fought ninetieth, one lap and seventy-three positions ahead of former champion Mathilde Denis – Yamaha. In the fiercely-contested Moto Veterans class Gregory Deleu – Fantic clinched the crown with his fifteen-lap total placing him three laps ahead of Andre Vossius – Yamaha with Dominique Mieuzet – Honda completing ten laps to secure second in the series. The third rider to end the season with maximum points, eighteen-year-old Paolo Maschio – Kawasaki completed his clean sweep of the Moto Junior 2 class registered riders ahead of Leopold Magnien – Husqvarna who was third today behind Evan Demeester – GASGAS.

In Moto Junior 1 Matheo Gerat – Yamaha signed off on top to take the title and Moto Junior 1 Women champion Ema Satabin – GASGAS claimed her fourth win of the campaign.Racing the previous day, home hero Felix Faure – Honda had already clinched the Moto Vintage title, but he ended the season in style with a winning margin of almost two minutes over Sebastien Antony – KTM.

Kellett takes Le Touquet victory https://www.motoheadmag.com/kellett-takes-le-touquet-victory/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 09:19:12 +0000 https://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=39402
Defending champion Todd Kellett kicked off the 2024 FIM Sand Races World Cup with a dominant overall win in the Motorcycle category at today’s Enduropale du Touquet Pas-de-Calais as Belgium’s Amandine Verstappen led home the registered riders in the Women’s class and Mickaël De Souza got his campaign under way on top in the Veteran’s class.

Britain’s Kellett, who won the legendary race on the north coast of France last season before going on to claim the inaugural FIM Sand Races World Cup, started the three-hour race near the front of almost thirteen-hundred competitors and sat third following the opening lap less than six seconds off the lead. By the end of the second thirteen-kilometre lap he was thirteen seconds ahead and he began to pull clear of a chasing pack that, by the completion of lap three, saw registered riders Lars Van Berkel from the Netherlands and Jeremy Hauquier from France running third and fifth.

Illustrating the depth of talent contesting this year’s series, Valentin Madoulaud held ninth at this point with Camille Chapeliere in twelfth, Maxime Sot sixteenth and Joey Nuques eighteenth and there could very well have been another registered rider running near the front if Belgian Yentel Martens – Honda, who started the series as a hotly-tipped rider, had not gone out on the opening lap. By the end of lap four Kellett led by almost one-and-a-half minutes from Van Berkel and Hauquier and although Hauquier then lost third to Cyril Genot as the race approached the hour mark, France’s Chapeliere looked solid in eighth, two places ahead of his compatriot Madoulaud.

By the halfway point Kellett’s lead was almost two-and-a-half minutes and he was in complete control, using all his hard-won experience to find smart lines through the traffic as conditions got increasingly rough, but Chapeliere slowed dramatically and dropped out of contention. On the penultimate lap Van Berkel fell and lost second position to Genot, but Kellett was out of reach and he completed his fifteenth and final lap with a winning advantage of two minutes and fourteen seconds with Van Berkel an additional thirteen seconds behind in third before a gap of over six-and-a-half minutes to fourth-placed rider Brian Bogers – Honda.
Today I feel like I’m back on my good level,” said Kellett. “It’s been a real challenge since my crash last October so I’m really pleased and proud to have done this. It’s a great start to the FIM Sand Races World Cup. This is the biggest beach race in the world – there’s no disputing that – and my secret [to winning] is just the sheer hunger and drive within me.”

The next registered rider to cross the line was France’s Maxime Sot – KTM who moved into the top twenty on lap two and pulled through all the way up to sixth overall with Hauquier finishing eighth, Nuques eleventh and Madoulaud sixteenth. In the fight for supremacy in the Women’s class, Verstappen started strongly and charged from just inside the top one-hundred-and-fifty riders at the end of lap three all the up to eighty-second at the finish on a total of twelve laps. Mathilde Denis – Honda from France, who won last year’s Women’s class in the FIM Sand Races World Cup, finished a lap down on her rival in one-hundred-and-ninety-eighth.

It was quite a complicated race physically, but from start to finish I kept my pace and held on,” said Verstappen. “So that produced a victory and a finish in the top one-hundred which I didn’t think I was capable of so I’m really pleased with my race.” The Veteran’s class is shaping up to be close and competitive this season with De Souza coming home in forty-second overall on thirteen laps, last year’s winner Arnaud Besnier – Honda finishing in eighty-first on twelve laps and Christophe Brucker – KTM completing a French one-two-three in one-hundred-and-seventh on eleven laps.

There is now a three-week break in the schedule before the six-round series resumes on 24-26 February with the Enduro del Verano in Argentina.

Le Touquet marks sand race world series start https://www.motoheadmag.com/le-touquet-marks-sand-race-world-series-start/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 18:15:46 +0000 https://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=39355
2024 FIM Sand Races World Cup gets under way this weekend. The eagerly-anticipated 2024 FIM Sand Races World Cup bursts into action this coming weekend (2-4 February) with the legendary Enduropale du Touquet Pas-de-Calais getting the extended six-round series under way on the coast of northern France.

There is huge excitement surrounding the 2024 series which has double the number of rounds compared to its inaugural edition in 2023 and with each round featuring its own unique format, the growing list of registered riders will be tested in a different way at every event. The number of separate categories has also been expanded to nine, ensuring that the 2024 FIM Sand Races World Cup is even more accessible.

With last year’s premier Moto class winner Todd Kellett – Yamaha yet to commit to the full series, the current favourite – on paper at least – has to be Belgium’s Yentel Martens – Honda. The son of 1993 FIM 500cc Motocross World Champion Jacky, former MXGP racer Martens was the only rider to beat Kellett last season when he won the final round – the Monte Gordo Sand Experience in Portugal – to secure a clear second in the series.

Martens can expect strong opposition from Frenchman Camille Chapeliere – KTM who finished fourth overall in 2023 with a best finish of second at the Enduro del Verano in Argentina along with last year’s fifth-placed rider Enzo Levrault – Husqvarna who is also from France.

In 2023 the Moto Women category saw a fiercely fought contest between fast French female Mathilde Denis – Honda and Amandine Verstappen – Yamaha from Belgium with Denis emerging on top and the pair will renew their rivalry this season, going head-to-head as the series visits five countries and two continents between February and December.

Last season’s Moto Veteran winner Arnaud Besnier – Honda from France is back for 2024 and aiming to stay on top, but he can expect a strong challenge from his compatriot Christophe Brucker – KTM who chased him all the way in 2023 along with, among other strong competitors, Frenchman Dominique Mieuzet – Honda.

Any chance France’s Keveen Rochereau – Honda had of victory in the Quad class evaporated last season when he sat out the second round, but a double win at the final round on the golden sands of the Algarve clearly demonstrated his potential and he is back in action again with his sights firmly set on the top step of the podium, although his fellow Frenchman Pablo Violet – Yamaha will certainly have other ideas.

In the Quad Veteran category Axel Dutrie – Yamaha from France and Portugal’s Paulo Fernandes – Yamaha are among the highly-fancied registered riders.

With the list of registered riders growing every day – and given the unpredictable nature of this form of racing – it is far too early to make any solid predictions, although following this weekend’s action we should have a much clearer picture of the riders to watch in 2024.

Britain to host Euro Beachcross round https://www.motoheadmag.com/britain-to-host-euro-beachcross-round/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 11:13:32 +0000 https://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=39178 Britain is to host a round of the new FIM Europe Beachcross European Cup on October 18-20 but no venue has yet been announced. The event, a week after the Weston Beach race, is not like a marathon three-hour beach race but a motocross-style, moto-type event that takes place on beach.

FIM Europe has announce the new Beachcross European Cup will be run by a new promoter called FORGIT Ltd. The agreement is for the organisation of a European Cup in 2024 and a European Championship for 2025 and 2026.

The European Beachcross Cup will start on March 3 at Soverato in Italy, the birthplace of the European Grand Trophy which will retain its historic name. The next rounds will cross the most evocative beaches in Europe, passing through the United Kingdom on October 18-20 and another stop in Europe on October 26-27.

Rinaldo Tirotta, President Stilaro Racing, said: “I thank the FIM Europe for the collaboration. An idea born in 2003 and the constant dedication has today created a new title with a fresh perspective, made possible also thanks to Claudio Bernardinelli, whose commitment has contributed to the realization of this new adventure.”

Vincenzo Tirotta, Forgit Ltd Director, said: “I’m enthusiastic about this new agreement with the FIM Europe. For this new project, we want to change the vision and the method which until now has made participation in an event prohibitive for teams and riders on a global level. In addition to the sporting celebration, the Beachcross European Cup, in fact, pays particular attention to the needs of the riders, considering the high costs associated with a competition of this stature. In line with this awareness, a logistical strategy aimed at facilitating riders to participate more easily in the event in every aspect, through the creation of an all-inclusive package that eliminates the stress of a competition and transforms it into an experience for the participants.”

Mewse in for Weston https://www.motoheadmag.com/mewse-in-for-weston/ Mon, 26 Sep 2022 17:45:23 +0000 http://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=35912
British MX2 Motocross Champion, Conrad Mewse will take on the Weston Beach Race in the Adult Solo race on Sunday 23rd October.

Shepton Mallet rider Conrad Mewse has a strong successful motocross career competing not only in the UK at the British Motocross Championship but also numerous FIM Motocross World Championship rounds. Now after taking the Revo ACU British MX2 Championship title for this season, Conrad is set to take on the maddest, baddest and biggest motorsport race on the UK calendar by competing in the gruelling 3-hour solo race on the sands of Weston-super-Mare.

Conrad last won the Weston Beach Race back in 2009, when he was competing on a 65cc machine, so it will be interesting to see what the three time British MX2 Champion can do.

“I last rode the Weston Beach Race back in 2018. I’m really looking forward to returning this year as it’s completely different to what I’m used to, but I had lots of fun last time. I will be heading out to Dunkirk to prepare for this year’s event. This year I will be competing on a KTM 450 with a bigger tank and different gearing. I won’t be changing much as the KTM’s are great out of the box. A podium finish at Weston would make a nice finish to my year.”

Thornhill takes Skeggy win https://www.motoheadmag.com/thornhill-takes-skeggy-win/ Tue, 09 Nov 2021 16:10:26 +0000 http://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=32629 Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha rider Dan Thornhill won one of the UK’s largest beach races this weekend, in Skegness.

2014 winner, Dan, managed to take the lead by the end of lap one on his Yamaha YZ450 and didn’t look back for the next two and a half hours! Dan took an emphatic win in front of the 200 strong field, and was a lap in front of 2nd place Neville Bradshaw.

A great way to end a fantastic season for Dan and to top it off, Dan’s brother Brad finished 11th in the main race also.

Dan Thornhill – “Great weekend for me at Skegness Beach. The race started well, inside the top 10, before getting into the lead come the end of lap 1. The track conditions in areas were very tricky and caught a lot of guys off guard. I picked my way through certain areas and managed to stay out of trouble where a lot of bikes were getting stuck.

“The race was not all plain sailing, stopping for fuel more than a lot guys and having a tip over in one of the wet areas cost some time overall, but I’m happy to have got the win and by the finish I was one lap ahead.

“Big thanks to everyone who make each week possible and have contributed to this year. Nice to end on a positive note heading into the off season.” Photo simonemorgan29.

Top 10 at Weston for Apico Husky trio https://www.motoheadmag.com/top-10-at-weston-for-apico-husky-trio/ Tue, 05 Oct 2021 17:34:54 +0000 http://www.motoheadmag.com/?p=32440 Apico Husqvarna had their last official race of the season at the 38th Weston Beach Race down on the Somerset coast. This would mark the teams 5th year competing at the event and Apico’s 6th year attending and raising money for charity. As the season finale, the weather was not going to put a dampener on the spirits and the last outing in 2021.

Apico Factory Racing had the Apico Hydration Station down on the promenade in conjunction with Ice Valley, where people could donate to Air Ambulance UK in memory of Jude Morris. The team setup certainly looked factory on the day with 4 awnings incorporating the Hydration Station and displaying the Husqvarna machinery of Stuart Edmonds on the FC450, Matt Burrows switching to the FC350 and Jamie Law on his TC250.

All the bikes were prepped with the usual beach race must-haves including oversized fuel tanks, O-ring chains, steel sprockets, filter and radiator covers to name a few of the products that help to finish one of the toughest endurance races the U.K. has to offer.

Jamie Law, 25 Husqvarna TC250 MX2 7th Overall

“After a different start, where we had to run to our bikes, I managed to get down to the gates inside the first 20 riders. I fell at the first dune after getting caught in an early pile-up. It felt like there were hundreds of riders in front of me at the end of the straight. I pushed on and cleared the larger dunes, then coming back through the smaller dunes I got a bit impatient and took a fresh line that buried the bike and it took more time and energy to get it out than I would have spent by waiting. Just in case that was a fluke, I made the same mistake again on the next lap! I settled into the race by lap 4 finding my flow and getting my head down to make up positions to finish 7th at the line. I was happy enough with the result after not feeling 100% leading up to the event. That said, with the mistakes I made during the race it could have been a lot worse. I’d like to thank all of the team and my family along with my sponsors for another great season”.

Matt Burrows, 25 Husqvarna FC250 MX2 8th Overall

“I’ve never known a Weston like it, I made a mistake at the first dune and fell off before getting straight back on and getting down the straight in the first 50 – 100 riders, the place was like a war zone! Jamie was stuck on the first lap and I went past him and then caught and passed my brother down the straight on the second lap to get into the top 35 riders. From this point, I made up positions and by lap 6 I was settled into the top 10. I’ve ridden a few Weston Beach Races and I’ve never known the weather to be as unpredictable and rain as heavy. I took my first pitstop of two at the 1.20hr mark. I pitted again whilst in 6th place with 38 minutes to go and had to change my goggles and refuel my bike as my pit crew had abandoned me! I’d also used all of the material on my front brakes and had to push the piston open and not use it. This is when Jamie caught and passed me along with another rider and I managed to finish 8th overall”.

Stuart Edmonds, 162 Husqvarna FC450 MX1 9th Overall

“I’d managed to get well placed out of parc fermé and clear the first dune for 5th down the start straight. I went through the big dunes without issues and it was when I hit the small corner dune I was caught out and lost some time. I managed to get into my flow again on lap 2, though it was when I came down one of the larger dunes I hit a bike in front, falling off and someone ran over my leg. The first couple of laps were absolute carnage. I got into a rhythm and started to make positions before pitting on the hour inside the top ten. That didn’t go to plan initially as I couldn’t find my pit crew! The second hour was hard with a couple of crashes, I managed to catch up with Carlton Husband and then crashed again. At the 2 hr point, I’d managed to pass my teammate Matt, though then lost the position after another big crash. I then managed to ride out the rest of the race sore and with a battered bike finishing 9th at the flag. I’d like to thank all my sponsors and the team for their help in preparing for this insane event”.

Dylan: Another year, another Weston! It’s good to be back with the team and the Apico Hydration Station. This year we changed things slightly and raised money for Air Ambulances U.K. in memory of Jude Morris. This charity still helps GWAAC, which we’ve collected for the previous 5 Westons, amongst other Air Ambulance charities. I have to take my hat off to Mark Morris and the people involved in raising money for Jude Morris, which must be close to the £70,000 milestone now, I hope the charity auctions and other efforts to raise funds in Jude’s name help to hit the £101k, eventually.

Racing was business as usual for the now seasoned Apico Husqvarna Weston competitors of Jamie Law, Matt Burrows and Stuart Edmonds. Jamie had it all to do on the 2 stroke, after a tough start he showed the grit and determination we’ve come to expect from his performances this year bringing it home in 7th position, the highest place of our riders. Matt led the team for most of the race. He’s competed in this event more than the others and has had some impressive results over the years. It was business as usual for him as he had a pretty much problem-free race until losing his front brake at the end, coming home in 8th. Stuart had a tough race too, with a few crashes and getting run over, he still managed to push on to bring his Husqvarna FC450 home in 9th for a 7,8,9 place finish for the team.

I’d like to thank Anna, the sponsors, riders, mechanics, media team and families for all helping this season. We’ve had some of the best results of recent years and that’s down to the hard work and dedication of the team. We’ve all gone that extra mile to make sure we have done our best. We now look to 2022 and hope to improve further on our achievements to date.
